Nature & Outdoor Recreation
Mountain trailheads within a 10-45 minute drive, plus in-town greenways for daily use.
Dylan's Real Voice
The Hook:
"Asheville sits at roughly 2,100 feet with mountain trailheads within a 10-45 minute drive of downtown, plus in-town greenways for daily use."
Personal Story:
The trail access here is a real, practical part of daily life for outdoor-focused residents, not just marketing copy — Bent Creek Experimental Forest and the in-town greenways are close enough for a regular before- or after-work routine.
Why This Matters:
Hurricane Helene's September 2024 flooding damaged trails and greenways across the region, and recovery has been uneven — some sections reopened within months, others (including part of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Craggy Gardens) remain closed as of this writing. Current trail status is worth checking before any specific trip.
Your Weekend Schedule
In-Town Trails
River Arts District Greenway
Post-Helene: modifiedFlat, paved riverside greenway popular with runners and walkers. Some sections sustained damage in the September 2024 flooding; the main through-route is open but watch for signage on detours.
Insider Tip: Free parking is available near New Belgium Brewing.
Summit Coffee
Reopened in a permanent Wedge Studios location in April 2026, after operating out of a mobile coffee truck for about 18 months following flood damage to its original RAD location.
Bent Creek Experimental Forest
US Forest Service land with an extensive trail network for running, hiking, and mountain biking, including the Hard Times Road/Green's Lick loops.
Insider Tip: Green's Lick is a moderate entry point for those new to trail running; parking is $5.
Highland Brewing
Outdoor sand volleyball courts with organized league play, run by Highland and by the Asheville Sport & Social Club.
Insider Tip: Email sports@highlandbrewing.com for the current league schedule; rec divisions are open to newcomers.
Blue Ridge Parkway Hikes
Black Balsam Knob
Above-treeline hike with 360-degree views, one of the more popular high-elevation hikes near Asheville.
Insider Tip: Conditions are windy and noticeably colder than the valley floor — bring layers regardless of season.
Rough Ridge via Tanawha Trail
Roughly 1.5-mile hike with a boardwalk section leading to expansive Linn Cove Viaduct-area views.
Insider Tip: The boardwalk can be slippery when wet.
Craggy Gardens area
Post-Helene: modifiedThe Parkway from Asheville to Craggy Gardens, including the visitor center and Craggy Pinnacle Trail, reopened in September 2025 after Hurricane Helene repairs. The Craggy Gardens Picnic Area is still closed for Helene-related work as of September 2026.
Insider Tip: Check the National Park Service's Blue Ridge Parkway status page for current mile-marker closures before planning a visit here specifically.
Lower-Key Options
Richmond Hill Park
City park with hill trails through a historic residential area, popular for hill-repeat training runs.
Insider Tip: A residential neighborhood surrounds the park — be mindful of noise.
Hominy Creek Greenway
Post-Helene: modifiedFlat, shaded greenway connecting to Carrier Park and the French Broad River Greenway, forming a longer loop option.
Insider Tip: Some sections show storm-related wear from the September 2024 flooding — check for detour signage.
Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary
Eight-acre nature preserve in North Asheville with a short boardwalk loop through wetland and along the lake — a popular easy walk and a well-known local running-route anchor, with residential streets around the lake commonly used for longer loops. Guided bird walks run the first Saturday of each month.
Insider Tip: The boardwalk loop itself is only about 0.3 miles — come for the birding and lake views, not for mileage. Dogs are not permitted.
DuPont State Recreational Forest
Post-Helene: modifiedState forest known for its waterfall trail loop (Hooker Falls, Triple Falls, High Falls), used in film productions including The Hunger Games. The Triple Falls Trail sustained serious erosion damage from Hurricane Helene and reopened after roughly eight months of repair work; a Grassy Creek bridge in the area remained closed for reconstruction as of mid-2026.
Insider Tip: Hooker Falls is the easiest of the three falls to reach; check DuPont's trail status page for current bridge/section closures before visiting.
Dylan's Must-Do List
- RAD Greenway, Bent Creek, and Beaver Lake — the three routes locals actually run on repeat
- Bent Creek's Hard Times Road / Green's Lick loop
- Black Balsam Knob, above the tree line
- Highland Brewing sand volleyball leagues
- DuPont State Forest's waterfall loop, post-Helene repairs permitting
Reality Check
- Trail shoes are worth it for anything beyond paved greenways
- Winter mornings stay dark until roughly 7:30am — bring a headlamp
- Summer humidity is significant; early starts are more comfortable
- Popular trailhead parking fills by mid-morning on weekends
- Trail and greenway conditions still vary post-Helene — check AllTrails or the relevant park/forest service page for current status before a specific trip
Where to Stay
Good greenway access and walkable to the rest of the neighborhood.
Direct greenway access, though still working through post-Helene rebuilding in parts of the district.
Getting Around
- • A car is needed for most trailheads
- • Greenways are accessible by bike
- • Rideshare availability is limited near Bent Creek and other trailheads
