Charleston's summer is a four-month argument with humidity that the harbor breeze never quite wins. Four hours inland and about 2,000 feet up, that argument mostly doesn't happen — Asheville's air breaks by evening even in July. What Lowcountry transplants miss is the water and the particular quality of coastal light; what they don't miss is the tourist traffic on King Street, or paying beachfront prices for a house that isn't on the beach.
