Dylan's Real Voice

The Hook:

"I have tried cortados at every single coffee shop around Asheville. Like, literally every single one."

Personal Story:

When I moved here from Boston, I had this PhD-level approach to finding the perfect cortado. I mapped out every coffee shop, created a spreadsheet (yes, really), and methodically worked through them all. My boyfriend thinks I'm insane, but now I can tell you exactly where to get your morning fix based on whether you need wifi, want to see cute gay baristas, or need a post-run caffeine hit.

Why This Matters:

Look, if you're considering moving here and you're a coffee person, you need to know the landscape. It's not just about the coffee – though holy shit, the coffee is good – it's about finding your spots. Where you'll work, where you'll meet people, where you'll become a regular.

Current cortado count: 147 and counting

Your Weekend Schedule

Friday
Day 1

The Essential Circuit

Dylan's routine: Start at Summit's RAD location because this is where I go literally every morning after my run at 6:30am.

6:30am

Summit Coffee Truck

✓ Dylan's been here
$4.50
RAD Greenway

Post-run cortado at the source

Dylan says:

"Their cortado is consistently perfect. The baristas know me by name and start making my drink when they see me coming. Post-run, sweaty, 6:30am – they don't judge."

Frequency: Every. Single. Morning.

Insider Tip: The coffee truck is faster than the indoor location. If you're there at 6:30am on weekdays, you'll see the entire gay running crew.

10:00am

Rowan Coffee

✓ Dylan's been here
$5-7
West Asheville

Work session at my office

Dylan says:

"This is my office. I've written so many contracts at the corner table. The wifi is solid, the coffee is excellent, and there's always at least three other gay realtors here."

Frequency: 2-3 times per week

Insider Tip: The new West Asheville location is less crowded than downtown. Grab the couch by the window if you can.

2:00pm

BattleCat Coffee Bar

✓ Dylan's been here
$5-12
373 Haywood Rd

Coffee to cocktails transition

Dylan says:

"Where coffee meets cocktails. The transition from cortado to Negroni is seamless here."

Frequency: Weekly

Insider Tip: Happy hour starts at 4pm. The coffee cocktails are legitimately good, not just gimmicky.

5:00pm

Firestorm Books

✓ Dylan's been here
$3-5

Coffee and radical politics

Dylan says:

"Worker-owned coffee shop and bookstore. The coffee is good, but the vibe is everything. This is where you go to feel part of something bigger."

Frequency: Monthly

Insider Tip: Check their event calendar. They host everything from trans support groups to anarchist book clubs.

Saturday
Day 2

The Connoisseur's Route

Dylan's routine: Long run day means trying coffee at multiple stops. This is literally my Saturday.

8:00am

High Five Coffee

✓ Dylan's been here
$5-8
190 Broadway St

Coffee science central

Dylan says:

"These people are coffee scientists. They'll talk to you about extraction rates and water temperature. I love it."

Frequency: Weekly

Insider Tip: Order whatever the barista is excited about that day. They know their shit.

10:30am

Ultra Coffeebar

✓ Dylan's been here
$5-7

Industrial space in RAD

Dylan says:

"Industrial space, excellent coffee, and you can watch artists work in the studios nearby. Peak Asheville."

1:00pm

Dynamite Roasting

✓ Dylan's been here
$4-6
Black Mountain (15 mins east)

Worth the drive for roasting nerds

Dylan says:

"Worth the drive. They roast on-site and the owner will literally teach you everything about coffee if you ask."

Frequency: Monthly

Insider Tip: Saturday mornings they do cuppings. It's free and you'll taste 6-8 different coffees.

4:00pm

Trade & Lore

✓ Dylan's been here
$6-10
37 Wall St

Where baristas drink

Dylan says:

"This is the industry spot. Every barista in town comes here after their shift."

Frequency: Occasionally

Insider Tip: Monday nights they do 'Shift Drinks' – half off for service industry.

Sunday
Day 3

The Local's Secret Circuit

Dylan's Must-Do List

  • Summit RAD truck at 6:30am - see the real morning crew
  • Rowan's corner table - unofficial gay realtor office
  • BattleCat's coffee to cocktail transition at 4pm
  • Saturday cupping at Dynamite in Black Mountain
  • High Five when you want to nerd out about extraction
  • Firestorm for coffee with a side of revolution

Reality Check

  • Budget $150-200/month if you're a daily coffee shop person (ask me how I know)
  • Most places close by 5-6pm except BattleCat and bars
  • Parking downtown sucks - budget time and quarters
  • West Asheville spots all have decent parking
  • Bring a laptop charger - outlets are currency
  • The coffee community is small - be nice to your barista

Where to Stay

West Asheville

Walking distance to the most coffee shops. This is where I'd live if I was optimizing for caffeine.

Downtown

More expensive but walkable to High Five and downtown spots.

Getting Around

  • West Asheville is walkable between shops
  • Downtown needs quarters for meters
  • RAD/Black Mountain need a car
